Reflect and chill?

by Olecia Christie

2020 is 70 days, 14 hours, 55 minutes (ok, you get the point) away, and like a true romantic, I am nostalgic about the days behind me and hopeful for the ones that lie ahead.

As 2019 draws to a close, I am forced to ask myself some pivotal questions, "what have I done with the past decade?" “What significant advances have I made towards growth and self-actualization." Still, more questions flood my thoughts, "have I lived authentically?" In short, "have I truly honored the gift of life?"

I thought of the past decade with openness. Open to the idea that it held countless accomplishments, failures, lessons, new life (literally), loss of life, and remarkable perspective.

Today, a decade seems like just yesterday. In a bold move, I relocated to the United States from the Caribbean, determined to navigate life as an immigrant on my terms. I learned so much in those early years; culture shifts and culture shock defined my experience. I was anxious about the future. Somewhere along the journey, I had set a personal goal to be better than what my new home offered me in those early years. What I didn't know at the time was that tomorrow would prove to be less important than yesterday.

As 2020 approaches, I challenge you to consider the past decade; highs and lows alike. Whatever you find on your journey, I urge you not to feel disillusioned with the past — it’s your cheat sheet for the future.
