Why I stopped wearing makeup on Zoom
by Olecia Christie
I like getting dolled up just about as much as the other girl. Ok, maybe thats an understatement. The truth is, I love everything about getting dressed up. It's an art form for me, and I can pull it off in less than 10 minutes if needed. And splashing on some light makeup was actually my favorite part of the process until I found myself doing it every day.
In the past six months, I've had to turn on video on zoom way more than I was accustomed to or preferred, and somehow I fell into a routine of wearing makeup every day in the virtual world–something I had never done before. But the lighting on zoom can be unforgiving, especially to those of us who are melanated.
It didn't take too long for me to realize this would not work. Dont get me wrong, I am pro-makeup. I just have no desire to wear it every day. And so I stopped. And boy was I in for a shocker when I realized how much worse the lighting can be on Teams. But I wasn't going back. I had already made up my mind.
My choice to not wear makeup on zoom was a simple step in me controlling a part of my day. It was simple but deliberate. I had taken back a part of my day that used to be enjoyable but started to feel like a chore.
This is an example of simple steps we can take to bring harmony to our lives. Now, this does not guarantee a stress-free day, but it creates space for one less thing to do; space I now devote to meditating before I start my day. To align ourselves for daily success, we must be willing to reexamine our time and efforts to determine what we need to nix or fix.
