My brand is more than cute swag — but dang it helps

"I thought brands were for corporations and products."

I could almost read the minds of the group of young professionals as I moved towards the center of the room to lead a focus group on branding— personal branding.

Or perhaps they were excited, and I assumed the quizzical expressions meant "what makes you qualified to speak on this topic?"

Whatever the case, I was sure there was some initial pause at the audaciousness of my presence. It was the kick to the gut I needed. No matter what happens here today, I have to get this right.

Ninety minutes later, we were the scene of a networking brunch, with the right doses of composed social laughter and post-session small talk.

Curious about what happened? Let's just say I landed somewhere between nailed it, and no one was confused. And, I gained a client.
